A motorcycle equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS) can be safer to ride than one without, according to recent research by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS encourages motorcyclists shopping for new bikes to choose one that has an anti-lock braking system. Some motorcycles are already sold with ABS systems, and the system is offered as an option on others.
Braking works differently on a motorcycle than it does in a car. On a bike, the front and back brakes are operated separately, and if either one locks up, the bike can skid, fall, and/or throw the rider – all of which can cause serious injury or death.
When the motorcycle has anti-lock brakes, however, the rider can brake hard in an emergency without worrying about whether the brakes will lock up. ABS brakes include sensors that constantly adjust the pressure on the brakes to keep them strong without allowing them to lock up. According to the IIHS, anti-lock brakes increase the chance of surviving a serious crash by 37 percent. They may also prevent accidents altogether: insurance research indicates that riders with ABS on their bikes file 22 percent fewer claims than riders without them.
