New Hampshire is well-known for its stunning foliage. The bold reds, golds, and orange of autumn call numerous leaf-peepers to the roads. But driving in leafy areas is not without its dangers, especially when it is rainy or has rained recently. Whether driving through the White Mountains to admire the sights or heading to work in Nashua, you must take precautions when driving on wet leaves.
According to the National Highway Safety Administration, a road with wet leaves can be just as slippery as an icy road. The water droplets atop the leaves make it difficult for tires to find traction, and the car may go into a skid. Leaves, wet or dry, can also mask potholes and other obstacles on the road.
Here’s what you need to know about driving safely on wet leaves and avoiding a crash.
SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVING ON WET LEAVES
• Slow down. When on a wet, leaf-covered road, reduce your speed. You should drive under the speed limit, as you would during heavy rain or in icy conditions.
• Brake gently. If you need to slow down, avoid jamming on the brakes. Your tires may spin out if you tap the brakes too abruptly on wet leaves.
• Keep your distance. Maintain at least two car lengths between your vehicle and the one in front of you. This distance will give you time to react calmly if the car ahead begins to skid.
• Clear leaves of your car. Before you start driving, it’s a good idea to scrape away any wet leaves stuck to your car’s roof or windshield so they won’t blow under your tires.
• Check your tires. If you anticipate driving on wet, leaf-covered road, make sure your tires are in good condition. You can check your tire’s tread depth with the “penny test.” Place a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you. If his head remains visible, you need to replace your tires.
