On March 2, 2010, a car crash occurred at the Side Toll Plaza in Hampton. A 26-year-old woman driving a 1998 Chrysler Town and Country van were heading westbound when she lost control of her vehicle and failed to stay within her lane. The van collided head-on into the center divider that separates the lanes through the toll plaza. The children were restrained in car seats at the time of the accident, and it is unclear if the woman was wearing a seatbelt.
The woman and her three children were immediately taken by ambulance to the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. The children were treated for minor injuries while the driver sustained serious injuries that required operation. New Hampshire State Police are still investigating the case.
Despite safety features on vehicles such as anti-lock brakes, airbags, and vehicle stability control, the number of auto accidents in America is increasing. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration reports that an average of six million car accidents occur each year in the U.S., causing about 40,000 deaths annually and three million injuries.
